Leaving the airport in Anchorage you immediately smell the aroma of FRESH air. It smelt like Pine trees mixed with a cool brisk air taste??!!?? Our travels bought us to Anchorage on our way to Seward, home of the Denali National Park. Do yourself a favor and spend the money that you would spend hiring a car to take the Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Seward railroad.
Make sure you are on the right hand side for the best scenic views of the rail car. You'll also do a good job if you get the last carriage as you are able to walk out the back door of the carriage and get unobstructed views from the back of the train. Alternatively, if you sit on the left hand side of the train, you'll be assured views of the Mountain Goats along the trip.
Once past the outskirt of Anchorage you'll pass through some great scenery. We went in April/May. There was still snow on the peaks of the mountains. You also pass through some great scenic vistas of the massive glaciers which will be seen on the left hand side of the train.
You should also hunt for a seat on the viewing platforms where there is a guide talking to you about the various sights along the way.
A great scenic and nature railroad trip. It cost us about $50 dollars One Way. If you are not strapped for time go for it. It's about how much you would spend for a rental car and gas anyway. Highly recommend it.
